Pocklington RUFC work hard to secure derby win against Beverley
Pocklington RUFC made hard work of a 23-16 victory in their Beverley derby, needing desperate defence in the dying minutes to hang on as the homesters pressed to level the scores.
Pock arrived at Beverley unbeaten, with the home side still looking for their first win, writes Phil Gilbank.

But the opening exchanges saw typical local derby fayre, full of penalties on either side, Beverley kicking two to Pocklington’s one to lead 6-3 on the half hour.
Pocklington then stepped up a gear, replacement Matty Downes leading with a couple of meaty charges, a lineout catch and drive bringing Archie Wilcock the first try.

Harry Matthews added the conversion, then straightaway his crosskick was well taken out wide by Jed Jackson to score.
Matthews’ second penalty on the stroke of half-time put Pock in the driving seat at 18-6.
And they maintained momentum on the resumption, Wilcock surging up the middle from the off.
Pock looked nailed on to extend their lead, but Louis Sangwin’s pass was intercepted for Beverley to grab a lifeline, racing 80 yards for 18-13 and put things back in the melting pot.
Pock went downhill thereafter. Persistently dropping the ball in good positions; while needless penalties predominated, Beverley kicking one to be just two points behind.
Pocklington finally regained composure, going back to basics and slowing things down.
A penalty to the corner saw ageless replacement Shane Seller wriggle over for Pock’s third touchdown and make it seemingly safe.
But Beverley knew a converted try could still tie matters, throwing the kitchen sink at getting back on terms in injury time.
Beverley battered at Pock’s line, while the visitors kept driving them back until the final whistle eventually brought relief and victory.
Back at Pocklington the Panthers won convincingly against Barton 36-16, but the Pilgrims lost 48-31 to Beverley 2nds.
On Sunday the U16s won 47-17 versus Lower Dales, followed by a 31-8 defeat by Hornsea for the Colts.
Highlight of Sunday was Pocklington Women’s stellar performance to beat West Park Leeds 27-5.
