Barry’s friend, Mike Holder, who is director of rugby at the Silver Royd club, said: “Barry has been an inspiration to many young sports people of the town, particularly through his love of rugby and cricket.

“This was especially true for me as he helped and supported me from when I first joined the club in 1969 throughout my playing and coaching career.

“He was an outstanding player and leader on the field and continued to support young people when he retired, coaching at youth and colts level.

“So many of our players and dads will have fond memories of Barry, who was always a positive, charismatic, character supporting all club teams and functions.

“In the last few years Barry became the club archivist, bringing together and archiving the club’s history.

“We all have our ‘Barry memories’ and he will be sadly missed.”

A statement posted on the club’s Facebook page said: “Barry represented everything that was good about Scarborough Rugby Club and has been at the heart of the club family for a generation.

“There will be few people who have had any involvement with Scarborough Rugby Club or many schools in Scarborough who haven’t been positively influenced by Barry.

“Clearly, due to the current national lockdown restrictions we are presently unsure of any further arrangements.

“However, in due course the club will be celebrating Barry’s life and his immeasurable contribution to the local rugby community.

“Our deepest sympathy and prayers are extended to Sandra and all Barry’s family and friends.

“RIP Barry.”
