TOMASZ CHADWICK: Flynn’s big day as mascot after winning new award

On Saturday we launched our Active Youth trainer of the week concept in partnership with McCain, where one lucky player in our minis set up gets to be the mascot for the first team’s home fixture.

As well as this, the player is invited to a pre-match dinner with his or her parents and also gets to run onto the pitch to have a few photos taken with some of the players.

For the foreseeable future, every week one player will be selected by the club’s coaches and myself as youth development officer.

The scheme is set up to offer a little reward to those that bring positivity and hard work to everything they do when training or playing at the club.

Both McCain and Scarborough RUFC want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication seen from the club’s young players every week, and allow them this little bit of recognition.

As well as a reward, we want this initiative to build bridges between youth and senior rugby.

Aspiration is a powerful motivator and watching the action will help these young players to picture themselves in one of the club’s senior men’s or ladies’ teams in the future.

This week 10-year-old Flynn Duncan-Fewster from Northstead School was selected to be our mascot.

Flynn wants to be an architect when he’s older and is also a fan of England’s captain Chris Robshaw.

To see Flynn smiling on the day and really enjoying himself really sparked the scheme off to a positive start.

I’m looking forward to the future where we can reward more of our youngsters for their continuous effort and love for the game.

Now onto other news.

After a successful visit to Yorkshire Carnegie with the women’s team, I’m delighted to announce that on the March 2, coaches from Yorkshire Carnegie will be coming across to Scarborough RUFC to deliver a coaching session for all our female players.

Their community manager Adam Blades will also be joining me in taking some taster sessions for younger girls in the local secondary schools.

This will coincide with Scarborough RUFC’s official launch of girls rugby for under-13s and under-15s on March 9.

It is a privilege to have such a successful institution like Yorkshire Carnegie take such an interest in Scarborough RUFC but it also speaks volumes for the service this club provides the community.

In April I will be looking to organise a club day out to one of Yorkshire Carnegie’s last home games where our younger players will have the chance to play on the pitch at half-time, and then meet the players after the match.

I’m sure as time passes our link to their club will continue to strengthen, which will be mutually beneficial for both parties in the long-term.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to give a special mention to Ryan Fowler, one of the stars from our under-16s squad.

Our under-16s have had a difficult season thus far, with a shortage of players really hindering their fixture list at times.

Ryan has always been ever present in this side and his work-rate in training and willingness to take feedback on board is truly humbling to see.

He is also now volunteering to film the first team fixtures so that they can be used for analysis by the senior sides here.

However, as if that wasn’t enough, Ryan has also expressed a keen interest in keeping a copy of the games so he can learn and analyse the game from his point of view.

He is a respectable young man and has a bright future ahead of him and I’m sure with the amount of effort he puts into the sport he will have a lot of success in the future.

Keep up the good work Ryan.

As a final reminder, if you haven’t found any childcare for the February half-term, Scarborough RUFC is hosting another Jacaranda’s Active Youth Camp for children aged four to 11.

The camps offer a range of activities and sports for both boys and girls to try their hands at and for only £10 a day.

Please email [email protected] for any bookings or enquiries.

Have a great end to your week.
