Valkyries bounce back to hammer Workington 56-0

Valkyries made an immediate impact on the game scoring a terrific try with just over a minute on the clock when fullback JJ Glanvill sprinted away to touchdown leaving a trail of would-be tackles in her wake.

Both sides worked hard to bring some structure to the game with Valkyries scrum-half Cathy-Ann Myers at the centre of the action with fly-half partner Sue Barker combining well.

The home side’s line-out was vastly improved on their first outing last week with locks Jess Bray and Lucy Wilding in fine form.

Leading 5-0 the Scarborough side’s penetration through the midfield was telling with Sue Barker and number eight Claire Wilkinson going over in the 14th and 26th minutes respectively to stretch the lead to 15-0.

The Cumbrian visitors worked hard to get back into contention before the game ran away from them, but their efforts foundered on the rocks of a hard-tackling home side.

And it was skipper Myers whose efforts saw her side stretch away with two tries from blistering breaks through the middle in the 33rd and 38th minutes.

The second converted by Myers herself for a 27-0 half-time lead.

And the young Irish scrum-half completed her hat-trick four minutes into the second half with a jinking run that took her past several flailing would-be tacklers to power over.

The proceedings were becoming a procession and tries from Wilding (from short range) in the 51st minute, substitute Amy Osbourne on the hour and another from Wilding, both converted by Myers, stretched the lead to 51-0 in the 68th minute.

The heads of the Workington girls never went down as they played out with pride.

However the Valkyries had the last word when wing Nicole Sedgwick rounded off a slick cross field move to glide over wide on the left for 56-0 with the last play of the game in the 79th minute.

Myers missed the conversion and referee Phil Barker blew for time.

A fairly well-structured all round performance from the home side entertained another good Silver Royd turnout; up-front Laura Welburn, Lucy Wilding and Jenna Redman took the eye while behind them Barker, Myers and Glanvill excelled.
