The town’s council have agreed to stump up the cash to host the event for what would be the second consecutive year.

And after the success of this year’s first stage, which passed along the East Coast, Welcome to Yorkshire boss Sir Gary Verity has underlined the qualities of Scarborough.

He said: “The finish in Scarborough was simply stunning. This year’s race was a fantastic showcase for both the town and the Yorkshire Coast as a whole.

“The riders coming around Marine Drive and the natural ampitheatre which that stage of the route created are memories that will stick in my mind for a long time to come.

“I think Scarborough proved to be a very fitting finale for Stage One of the inaugural race.

“We’ve had plenty of good feedback about the town and I would imagine that the positivity surrounding this year’s event is one of the main reasons why Scarborough Borough Council have decided to apply to host the Tour again.”

Scarborough must now wait to see if they will be given the nod for the second year running.

The date for the 2016 event will be decided at the end of this month, and then the provisional start and finishing towns of the event will be announced in October.

Verity added: “Obviously there are a lot of places keen to host the start or finish of the race, Scarborough is just one of a number of locations that are in the mix.

“We are still in the process of putting everything together with the aim of once again coming up with a course that takes the plaudits from both participants and commentators alike.”
