For the second week in a row, conditions were not ideal with rain and high winds hindering both sets of players.

Nevertheless Scarborough’s second string put in a fine battling performance against a strong visiting Driffield side and there were two braces of tries for Scarborough in each half on their way to victory.

The first-half double came from Canadian prop Alessandro Zavatti, running in strongly under the posts for the first try, followed by the usual quick-thinking from scrum-half Jordan Wakeham, who took a quick tap from a penalty and showed the flailing defence a clean pair of heels.

In the second half good handling from forwards and backs combined to put the ‘Flying Viking’ Jack Anderson through on the wing and he crossed in the corner.

A well-taken penalty by Wakeham brought the score to 18-10 followed by another fine break from Wakeham to put skipper Simon Dixon over for the final try.

This was a third successive home victory for the Vikings against three good sides in Goole, Beverley and Driffield.

The Vikings now sit at the top of the Yorkshire East Merit League along with close rivals Hullensians, who they host at Silver Royd on the February 20.

The Vikings have a free weekend ahead and will look for a powerful performance against their title rivals the week after to maintain their unbeaten home record this season, as they push for title success.

Ryan Fowler stood out for the victorious Vikings with strong performance.
