Fun-filled night as Bowling For Soup and Frank Turner deliver epic co-headline show at Scarborough Open Air Theatre

The Yorkshire coast was rocking last night (July 2) as Texan pop-punk legends Bowling For Soup joined forces with folk-punk favourite Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls for a huge co-headline show, bringing their Bowl My Bones Tour to TK Maxx presents Scarborough Open Air Theatre.

The two genre-defying acts and long-time friends delivered high-energy sets under summer skies.

Opening the evening were alternative rockers American Hi-Fi, who got the crowd warmed up ahead of another unforgettable night on the coast.

Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls kicked things off with a powerful, singalong-filled performance featuring fan favourites including I Still Believe, Photosynthesis, 1933, Recovery and a rousing finale of Four Simple Words.

Frank recalled his previous last visit to Scarborough, with impressive precision, asking fans: “Do you remember what you were doing on August 11 2007? I was playing a beach festival here in Scarborough which was something like show 330 – and I’ve not been back here for nearly 3000 shows. I

"I’ve been practising for 19 years to be better at what I do for the wonderful people of Scarborough.”

Frank was electric, running from one side of the stage to the other, getting the crowd bouncing on their feet. He managed to get a circle pit and a wall of death (with added hugs to ensure safety), ending the set by making the Scarborough crowd raise their arms and twirl like ballerinas.

The crowd were happy to do it, enjoying the fun and screaming along with the frontman.

Bowling For Soup closed out the night with a hit-filled set, opening with Almost before tearing through crowd favourites High School Never Ends, Ohio (Come Back to Texas) and Today Is Gonna Be A Great Day — also known as the theme song to Disney's Phineas and Ferb. Plenty of chat extended the show, with massive singalong moments, a guitar giveaway and fireworks bringing the heat. The band brought the night to a close with Star Song and 1985.

Hilarious crowd engagement is something the band is well known for, and they did not disappoint on the Yorkshire coast. The band autographed an ‘I missed my prom for this’ sign from a very happy and screaming fan, impressed by her dedication.

A highlight of the night was when lead singer Jaret Reddick spotted a young boy on someone’s shoulders. The cameras panned to the child and showed the wonderful homemade t-shirt he was wearing, with lyrics written on one side and the statement ‘I am ‘Bowling for Soup’s biggest fan’ on the back.

Jaret was very impressed and asked for the boy’s name, subsequently getting the whole Open Air venue to chant ‘Jacob’ and ensuring that fan has a memory he will cherish forever.

This fun-filled community spirit captures exactly what Bowling for Soup is all about, and as the gig came to an end the crowd left with huge smiles on their faces.

TK Maxx presents Scarborough Open Air Theatre 2026 – which sees a record 26 headline shows from some of music’s biggest and best-known stars – continues tonight (July 3) when multi-platinum singer-songwriter James Arthur heads to the venue, followed on Saturday by David Grey, Sunday’s Alanis Morissette show and Monday’s performance from Michael Bublé.
