One of the foremost respected and most successful punk bands - formed 44 years ago in Hersham - Sham 69 went on to stack up five top 20 singles, including If the Kids Are United and Hurry Up Harry.

They performed on the BBC’s Top of the Pops and went on to appear in the rockumentary film, D.O.A.. The original unit broke up in 1979, with frontman Jimmy Pursey moving on to pursue a solo career.

In 1987, Pursey and guitarist David Parsons reformed the band, joined by a new line up. Although subsequently going through a number of line-up changes, Sham 69 remain active and are still playing gigs.

Sham 69 now hit the Pavilion in Whitby this Friday, November 22.

Original members including iconic singer Pursey will be playing a set list including their greatest hits and classic songs from the punk era.

They are enjoying something of a renaissance as their unique brand of punk and social comment is being heard by a new audience whilst older followers are keen to relive the great atmosphere the band create.

Sham 69 have a reputation for energetic performances with singalong classics, celebrating punk rock and all that catapulted the band to success in the 1970s. The band also include current songs in the set ensuring a mixed bag of what they describe as ‘up and at it’ music.
