Woman in Black is back at Theatre Royal

For 25 years The Woman in Black has been scaring audiences – and the UK tour to mark the quarter of a century arrives at York Theatre Royal.

Malcolm James plays solicitor Arthur Kipps, a man haunted by events 30 years earlier, who re-enacts them with the Actor, played by Matt Connor.

In a bid to exorcise those demons of the past, Arthur Kipps hires the actor to help him tell his story for the audience he intends to invite to what is perceived to be an empty auditorium.

Artistic director of York Theatre Royal Damian Cruden said: “The Woman in Black is back by popular demand after a week-long run in 2013.

“We’re really proud to be hosting this critically acclaimed production, and with our own ghostly history we’re sure audiences will be thoroughly spooked afterwards.”

The Woman in Black was first performed at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough in 1987. It is based on the nivel of the same name by Susan Hill, who is from the town,

The original production received rave reviews, paving the way for future productions throughout the country. It reached the West End in 1989 where it has been a major audience puller ever since. Its success has subsequently reached a global level.

The Woman in Black opens on Monday November 17 and runs until Saturday November 22, daily at 7.30pm.
