A Humberside Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Recently, we attended a house fire caused by an overloaded electrical socket. Thankfully, the occupiers got out safely and were checked over by paramedics for minor smoke inhalation. But it could have been much worse.”

Safety tips to residents include:

• Avoid plugging too many appliances into one socket or extension lead as this can cause overheating. • Never plug one extension lead or adapter into another • Check plugs, sockets and extension leads for scorch marks and damage such as fraying and replace immediately. •l Test your smoke alarms regularly and make sure they beep when tested. Also have them on every floor of your home. • If there’s a fire, get out, stay out and call 999. Never use water on an electrical fire.

The spokesperson added: “Taking a few minutes to check your plugs, sockets and extension leads, and making sure your smoke alarms are working, can help prevent a fire and save lives if one starts.

“When did you last test your smoke alarms?”
