With NHS scan waiting lists stretching into months, more patients are paying privately for answers that can arrive in days — not weeks
As NHS waiting lists for diagnostic scans stretch ever longer, more patients are turning to private providers for quicker answers – often at prices that aren’t as eye-watering as many assume.
One such provider, private imaging network Scan.com, says interest in its services has climbed sharply in recent months as access to MRI and CT scans through the NHS becomes increasingly delayed. The company now works with over 200 scanning locations across the UK, partnering with leading hospital groups and independent imaging centres.
A key difference is how the service works. Patients can book directly online without needing to see their GP first. After submitting their details, a registered clinician assesses symptoms, selects the most appropriate scan, and issues an internal referral. Appointments are usually available within a few days, with most results delivered within 48 hours.

The service is aimed at people seeking fast reassurance or early detection of conditions sometimes described as “silent killers”, including heart disease, aneurysms and certain cancers that can progress without obvious early symptoms. Early imaging can be crucial, particularly when timing plays a role in outcomes.
Costs start at roughly £300 for an MRI scan, £180 for an ultrasound and around £250 for an echocardiogram. For those wanting a broader picture, a full-body MRI covering the brain, chest, abdomen and pelvis is priced at about £1,499.
Every scan is reviewed by a consultant radiologist, and patients receive a detailed written report that can be passed on to their GP or a specialist for further care if needed.
Once considered an option only for those with deep pockets, private diagnostic imaging is becoming a more realistic alternative for people who don’t want to wait weeks or months for answers.
