Casey Rudd’s superb ton fails to save Brid from defeat at Sessay

Skipper Casey Rudd’s brilliant ton proved to be in vain on Saturday as Bridlington CC 1sts lost by five wickets at high-flying Sessay in the YPLN Premier Division 2.

Rudd won the toss and decided to bat, the opener soon making sure he took full advantage of this decision.

While fellow opener Tom Norman departed for five runs with the total on 33, the second-wicket partnership of 99 in 23.1 overs between the captain and Will Norman, who was dismissed for 45 in 80 deliveries.

Rudd carried on his superb batting with number four batsman Calum Hatton, this time sharing a 67-run stand in 8.5 overs, taking the Brid score to 199 at the 40 over-mark.

The Bridlington skipper was finally dismissed for an excellent 121 from 125 balls, including 14 fours and two sixes.

Late big-hitting from Harvey Dixon (16 in 12 balls), Tim Atkin (24no from 11 deliveries) and Jamie Boynton (15 in 10 balls) helped maintain Brid’s excellent run-rate as they ended up on 292-8 from their 50 overs.

James Margerison was the pick of the home bowlers with 4-59 in his 10 overs.

Sessay captain Mark Jackson, like his Bridlington counterpart, was the main man with the bat for the home side, and his 77 from 104 deliveries was the driving force behind their successful run-chase.

Jackson and fellow opener Joe Watson (16) put on 34 for the first wicket, Jamie Artley dismissing the latter.

A half-century stand between Simon Mason (21) and Jackson followed as Sessay continued to impress.

The turning point was the arrival of Ayana Siriwardhana at the crease, as he smashed 58 from just 29 balls, including four sixes and five fours in a third-wicket stand of 82 with his skipper.

Jackson finally fell to the bowling of Rudd, but an undefeated sixth-wicket 59-run stand between Tom Sowerby (59no) and all-rounder Will Jenkins (32no) steered the home side to a victorious 294-5 with 7.3 overs to spare.

Hatton was the pick of the visiting bowlers with 2-77, with a wicket apiece for Rudd, Tom Norman and Artley.

Second-from-bottom Brid entertain Welton this Saturday.
