Help wanted by police after suspected arson in Sandsend

North Yorkshire Police is appealing for information following a fire on the headland at Sandsend, between the beach and the A174, close to the golf course and the disused car park.

At around 9.40pm on Saturday, July 25, officers were on scene with partner agencies dealing with an unrelated incident when they noticed large plumes of black smoke filling the sky. Emergency services attended and the fire was subsequently extinguished. Enquiries carried out so far lead officers to believe that the fire was started deliberately, and an investigation is now underway. A police spokesperson said: “We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a man wearing a burgundy-coloured top, accompanied by a black dog, getting into what has been described as a white pick-up truck or flatbed Transit-style van in the area around the time of the incident. “We are also appealing for anyone who was travelling on the A174 near Sandsend at around that time and may have dashcam footage, or anyone who witnessed a person or vehicle matching the above description. “Additionally, officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity involving two large tractor-style tyres in the area before the fire was discovered. “Anyone with information, CCTV, doorbell footage, dashcam footage, or any other information that may assist the investigation, please contact us online in the first instance.
