Coastguard team called out to North Landing incident

Just after midday on Sunday, July 12, Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team was retasked from another incident to reports of a further two people and a dog in difficulty amongst the rocks at North Landing, Flamborough, after paddleboarding in the area.

On arrival, the Officer in Charge carried out a dynamic risk assessment and determined that the safest course of action was for a tethered Coastguard Water Rescue Officer to enter the water and wade/swim to the casualties’ location.

Once with the casualties, it became apparent that one of them had sustained a significant lower leg injury.

With the tide continuing to rise, a rescue plan was developed to safely evacuate everyone from the rocks.

The injured casualty and her dog were floated to safety on a paddleboard under the close supervision of Coastguard personnel, whilst the second casualty was assisted across the rocks and back to the beach.

A Coastguard spokesperson said: “Once ashore, both casualties were assessed by Coastguard Rescue Officers trained in casualty care. Due to the nature of the injury, it was suspected the female casualty had sustained a lower leg fracture, and an ambulance from Yorkshire Ambulance Service was requested. Following assessment, she was handed into the care of the ambulance crew for further treatment.

“We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.

“Today’s incident serves as a timely reminder that whilst our coastline can appear calm and inviting, conditions can change quickly and seemingly accessible areas can become hazardous. Always wear appropriate clothing and safety equipment, carefully consider whether your chosen activity is suitable for the conditions, and ensure you have a reliable means of calling for help.

“If you see anyone in difficulty on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
