Shortly after 2pm, Humber Coastguard received a call from a local angling boat that 2 people were shouting for help under the cliffs about one mile north of Filey Brigg.

A few minutes later, Filey’s inshore lifeboat (ILB), Braund, launched with Richard Johnson, Gary Wilson and Callum Garton as crew. Filey Coast Rescue Team also attended.

The couple were soon spotted by the ILB crew and although a bit wet and cold, they were none the worse for their ordeal.

They had been walking The Cleveland Way and had decided at Cayton Bay to do the last stretch on the beach. Unfortunately, it is impossible to walk from Cayton Bay to Filey and they were soon cut off by the tide.

They were picked up by the ILB and brought to Coble Landing , Filey where they were taken by Filey Coast Rescue Team for a hot drink and some warmth.

Barry Robson, Coxswain said: “You can’t walk along the beach from Cayton Bay to Filey and although it looks very inviting and clear, people suddenly realise that they can go no further and as the tide comes in, they can’t even re-trace their steps.

"Anyone walking The Cleveland Way must stick to the path at the top of the cliffs. Luckily, a passing angling spotted heard the cries for help and were able to alert the Coastguard."
