Burniston residents to show opposition to drilling at fracking consultation meeting

Anti-fracking and climate campaigners will join local residents to show opposition to plans to drill for gas on the edge of the North York Moors this Thursday (September 26).

The event will begin at 12.30pm outside Burniston & Cloughton Village Hall, where Europa Oil and Gas will be holding a consultation on their plans for a ‘hydraulic fracking’ project.

The project aims to establish whether gas in an underground reservoir at Burniston could be extracted for “commercially viable production”.

Last week, over 100 people attended the same venue for an event organised by Frack Free Scarborough, where they heard the case against the proposals from a number of experts, as well as local MP Alison Hume.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We don't want or need this environmentally damaging industry on our doorstep, having seen what it has done to other communities.

“At this time of climate emergency, we need to be reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, not squeezing out the last drops for the sake of short-term profit.”

People have been invited to bring banners and placards, and there will also be an information and refreshments stall.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service earlier this month, Europa CEO William Holland said the company would “listen to people’s concerns.”

Mr Holland also stated that if plans are approved by North Yorkshire Council, the rig would be onsite for 45 days and that “no one’s going to notice” due to the “small volume” of the scheme.
