Flamborough family brings wood-fired sauna experience to North Landing beach
ROE Wild Saunas offers visitors the chance to enjoy a wood-fired sauna beside the historic North Landing lifeboat slipway, with plans for a custom-built sauna in the future.
A local family is bringing a taste of Scandinavian living to the East Yorkshire coast with ROE Wild Saunas, a wood-fired sauna experience set on the sand at North Landing, Flamborough.

Sam and Belle, alongside their six-month-old daughter Elspeth, are building the venture around Sam’s love of sauna culture, developed during the years he spent living in Norway, where he fell in love with the Scandinavian lifestyle.
The business also has deep roots in the local fishing community. Sam comes from a long-established fishing family who continue to launch their boats from the beach, making ROE Wild Saunas a true family affair.
Sam currently works away in Germany on boats, and the couple are developing the sauna business as part of their ambition to have him home more often.
Set beside the old North Landing lifeboat station slipway, ROE Wild Saunas offers panoramic sauna sessions beneath Flamborough’s famous chalk cliffs, with visitors able to step out into the sea that local lifeboat crews and fishermen have used for generations.
For 122 years, lifeboats launched from the slipway to help those in trouble at sea. Now, visitors can experience the elements in a different way, combining the heat of a wood-fired sauna with the fresh sea air and, for those who choose, a dip in the water.
The current sauna is a PortaSauna tent, which allows the family to pitch directly on the sand beside the sea and offer a distinctive outdoor sauna experience. Plans are also in place to add a custom-built wood sauna to the location in the future.
ROE Wild Saunas aims to open most weekends, although sessions depend on the weather and sea conditions. The timetable on the business's website is updated regularly, allowing customers to check availability and book when sessions are running.
A shared sauna session costs £12 per person for 55 minutes, while a private session, giving a group exclusive use of the sauna for up to 10 people, starts at £70. Shared sessions have up to seven seats, and friends or family can book several seats together.
Booking is available online through the ROE Wild Saunas website. For those already visiting North Landing, same-day availability can be checked by scanning the QR code on the sign at the sauna or visiting their website. However, booking ahead is the best way to guarantee a place.
Visitors are asked to arrive ready in their swimwear and bring two towels, flip-flops and a water bottle. Each session begins with a safety briefing, including guidance on how the sauna works, how long to stay inside and how to relax.
There are no lifeguards on site, and anyone entering the sea does so at their own risk.
The family hopes the experience will appeal to everyone, from experienced sauna enthusiasts to complete beginners, offering an opportunity to unwind alone or with friends and family while embracing the coastal surroundings.
