Quick-thinking passers-by rescue person who fell into Whitby harbour

Whitby RNLI has thanked members of the public for their quick actions after a person fell into the harbour on Tuesday (October 27).

On arrival they found that the casualty had been pulled from the water by passers-by using a life ring.

Whitby RNLI coxswain Richard Dowson said: “They did exactly the right thing using the life ring, the water is cold at this time of year and cold water shock can kick in very quickly.

“We don't advise jumping in to rescue someone as you can then find yourself in difficulty as well.

“If you see someone in difficulty in the water dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard then throw them a life ring if possible.

“In this case, they got the casualty out of the water and we stood by until the ambulance arrived - well done to all involved.”
