Glaisdale School pupils plant daffodil bulbs donated by Whitby Lions

Whitby and District Lions has donated 40 daffodil bulbs to every school in the area in a bid to get children out into the fresh air and growing.

As part of the initiative, former Lions President Chris Roe, and Bob Bennett visited Glaisdale School to help pupils plant the bulbs in a bid to introduce a riot of colour to the school grounds.

Whilst at the school, Mr Roe took the opportunity to introduce Lions Clubs International (the largest service clubs organisation in the world).

Children were asked to guess how many members the organisation has worldwide “150”, “2,000”, “One million” came the replies. The actual total is 1.4 million people, who are part of 48,000 clubs in more than 200 countries.

Mr Roe said: “We’re hoping to eventually have a Young Lions hub at each school.

”This will encourage youngsters to get involved in the local community and learn how to look after the environment.”

The plan is for Young Lions to complete small tasks, getting involved in Lions’ litter picks, helping at home and taking part in the Lions Colour Run and Boxing Day Dip, with medals awarded for the successful completion of tasks. Mr Roe said: “The UK Lions Club motto is ‘Ordinary people doing amazing things’ and we want young people to be part of it.”

After the presentation ten of the students took the daffodil bulbs to a small grassy bank outside the school to be planted.
