Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team was alerted at 5.15pm and sent out three coastguard officers in water rescue equipment.

Due to the depth of water between the cliff and the safety of the East Pier, it was decided that the safest and driest way to bring those stuck back to safety was by inshore lifeboat.

Humber Coastguard Operations Centre requested the launch of Whitby RNLI lifeboat's inshore lifeboat and all three were taken to the RNLI boathouse.

A spokesperson for Whitby Coastguard Rescue said: "We hope that this incident underlines the importance of checking the weather and tidal conditions before you set out so that you can prepare accordingly.

"There are a wide variety of websites and mobile apps which can be used."
