Udderly Dale-icious expands with third milk vending location in Castleton

A family-run dairy farm in Glaisdale is bringing its fresh, locally produced milk to even more customers with the opening of a third distribution point at Off the Scale in Castleton.

The third-generation, red-tractor assured family farm with a herd of around 90 dairy cows produces fresh, whole, pasteurised, non-homogenised milk, which is available through its Udderly Dale-icious milk vending machines.

The new Castleton location adds to the business’s existing outlets at Woodhill House in Ugthorpe and Wilf Nobles Building Supplies in Ruswarp, giving more people across the Esk Valley and surrounding area the opportunity to buy milk produced on their doorstep.

Uderly Dale-icious owner Kim Johnson, who runs the business alongside fiance Fred Thompson said: “Everyone who comes in loves how local the milk is and how fresh it is.”

The farm’s milk is sold fresh from the vending machines, with customers able to purchase a reusable, branded one-litre glass bottle for £2.50 and then fill it with a litre of milk for £1.40. Customers can also add milkshake flavouring, with strawberry, banana and chocolate among the permanent favourites, alongside changing special flavours each week.

As the milk is non-homogenised, the cream naturally rises to the top when the bottle is left standing, just as it would with traditional gold-top milk. A simple shake of the bottle mixes the cream back through the milk.

The farm says its milk averages 4.5 per cent fat and 3.5 per cent protein, and has a four-day shelf life from vending.

Alongside its milk and milkshakes, Udderly Dale-icious also stocks reusable bottles and a selection of other products from local businesses, helping to support the wider local economy.

Lizzie Watson, owner of gluten free bakery and zero waste refill shop Off the Scale, said she had long wanted to offer fresh milk from Udderly Dale-icious: “Why would you not want fresh milk from cows that are literally just over the hill?

“It’s a good quality product, Kim and Fred use the low and slow pasteurisation method, which means the milk tastes so much better than milk which is pasteurised at a higher temperature.

"It’s amazing how many people say to me it tastes like milk used to, or it’s just like the milk you used to get in school – only better.”

Customer Wayne Stephens echoed the sentiment, saying: “It’s nice and local and there’s something special about helping yourself. I’d much rather support a local farmer and local people. And the milk tastes good too!”

The new Castleton vending machine is available during Off the Scale opening hours 8am-4pm Tuesday to Saturday. Wilf Noble building supplies’ machine operates from 7am-5.30pm Monday to Friday and 7am-2pm on a Saturday and the machine at Woodhill House (What3words: daffodils.flashing.opposite) is open 24 hours.
