In February, five Scarborough trawlers, Cardew, Crystal, Emulator, Riby and The Persian Empire, were machine-gunned by German aircraft while fishing in the North Sea.

In June the Floral Hall closed for the duration of the war with a farewell performance of the Rolling Stones Concert Party.
7. 1940
In September, a 25-year-old woman, employed at Plaxtons, was shot dead on South Bay sands (closed to the public at sunset) when failing to respond to an army sentry's challenge.

in November Scarborough and District Spitfire Fund closed, having raised nearly four thousand pounds since it was launched in September 1939.
