9. 1941
1941 was the worst year in the war for air raids on Scarborough. In March, a fierce blitz one night killed over 20 people, including a family of six in North Marine Road, and Dennis' printing works in Melrose Street went up in flames.
10. 1941
In July the Scarborough Evening News reported that pigs were being kept on the cliffs below the Grand Hotel, with RAF personnel billeted in the hotel tending to them.
11. 1941
HRH Princess Royal, as Controller Commandant of the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service), visited Scarborough to inspect the local platoon.

At Christmas, to combat a scarcity of Christmas presents, Quartons greengrocers suggested 'Give Carrots for Christmas' ... and many people did !
