NatWest’s plan for ‘prominent’ site at Whitby harbourfront is approved by North Yorkshire Council

NatWest’s application to update its “prominent” Whitby ATM kiosk has been approved by North Yorkshire Council.

NatWest’s remote ATM kiosk at New Quay Road in Whitby is set to be updated with new advertising panels as part of a plan approved by the council.

The kiosk occupies the site of a former BT phone box and is of a “standard design and appearance, and the existing ATM is present within the kiosk”.

“The kiosk occupies a prominent yet unobtrusive position on the public highway along a pedestrian route adjacent New Quay Road, opposite the harbour frontage,” planners stated.

No objections to the scheme were made by Whitby Town Council.

The proposed ATM vinyl will be “applied directly onto the existing BT kiosk, maintaining the overall scale and form of the structure”, according to a report.

Officers said that the “advertisement is modest in size and will be contained within the existing ATM surround, ensuring no visual clutter or excessive prominence from its appearance and design”.

The ATM is located in the town’s conservation area, but planners said that “given the urban, commercial use of New Quay Road, which is characterised by shopfront signage, tourist-related advertisements, and public infrastructure, the proposal is considered appropriate in scale and character”.

They added: “The advertisement respects the form and function of the kiosk, does not introduce excessive displays along the streetscene and is visually consistent with similar ATM signage commonly found within town centres.

“Furthermore, it would not detract from the historic character of the harbourfront.”

The application was approved by North Yorkshire Council on Tuesday, November 25.
