New top Whitby bar The Treasury gets go-ahead for external renovations

A top new bar and restaurant in Whitby has received the green light for external changes.

The Treasury in Whitby, which is located in a Grade II-listed former bank at 4 Baxtergate, can proceed with the creation of a new doorway, the council has said.

Business owner and local lifeboatman Ali Hussain’s plan to construct a fire escape was approved by North Yorkshire Council last month.

The new premium bar has transformed the former HSBC bank, which opened its doors to customers for the first time in June.

Speaking at the launch of the bar, owner Ali Hussain said: “It means a huge amount to us and, more importantly, hopefully, for Whitby as well.

”It’s just an iconic building that has meant so much to so many families.”

According to a planning report, the fire escape door will be constructed out of a three-panel timber door within a timber surround and will replace an existing section of the south-western elevation.

The doorway will include a stone lintel, while the reveal face of the stone will be dressed to match the front face of the existing stonework.

Although the council’s conservation officer did not submit a formal response, they were involved in the design process by way of encouraging a form of doorway which would be sympathetic to the listed building.

According to a council report: “Whilst the proposal would result in the loss of a small section of original historic fabric, the proposed materials and design are such that they would link positively to the existing architecture by way of their sympathetic design, materials and relatively minor intrusion into the original elevation.”

The application was approved by North Yorkshire Council, subject to conditions.
