The Piebald Inn, Hunmanby: They have all the pies

If The Dandy character Desperate Dan was real this is the very place he would tie his bib round his neck and tuck into a big ‘cow pie’.

Because to coin a phrase this place has all the pies – big enough to satisfy the comic character’s big appetite and then some.

The Piebald Inn in Hunmanby is a member of the Pie Pub Company – its aim ‘to spread the word and bring our ‘Wold Famous’ award winning pies to as many hungry people as possible across the county’.

It’s certainly working – Saturday night was packed to the rafters with diners – with many clearly making a return visit.

The pub serves exactly what it says on the tin – pies – but the choice of fillings is huge.

They range from Percheron – ox cheek slowly braised with bacon, shallots, chestnut mushrooms, carrots, celery, garlic, parsley and red wine – at £13.95 to the Seahorse –mixed fish with onions, peas and boiled egg in a creamy white sauce (very slightly curried) topped with mash and then pastry – at £12.95

The six vegetarian options range from Mountain and Moorland – butternut squash, onion, sweet potato, rosemary, baby spinach and mozarella with a cheesey stilton sauce – at £9.50 to Zanskiri – roasted seasonal vegetables and chickpeas served in a masala sauce, mild but packed full of flavour – also at £9.50.

My dining companion chose The Shire, diced steak and potato cooked in Hunmanby-based Wold Top bitters and onions in a thick gravy, £11.25.

Marwari – pork vindaloo, for those who enjoy something really hot, a classic vindaloo made of belly pork and spices – at £9.50 was my choice.

All pies are served with a choice of potatoes and either garden or mushy peas – and that to quote Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives’ host Guy Fieri is all she wrote.

But it was more than enough – the portions are generous. Both pies were juicy with the pork pie hot and spicy, too. It is not just about the filling – the pie crust was thick yet crispu and crumbly. We could have opted for game, lamb or chicken – and if pies are not to your liking there are steaks and fish and chips on the menu.

Each dish is cooked to order – so there is a wait. That is explained by the host before you order – as well as being told of any menu changes.

We waited three quarters of an hour – so it is not for the impatient. That said, the second you are shown from the bar into the eating area your meal is put in front of you and is piping hot.

Homemade puddings are also available – and my companion had left enough room for a limoncello sponge with ice-cream.

Our bill with drinks came in at under £40 which for pie and potato seems like a lot of money – but the quality of what is on offer is worth paying that little bit more.

This is a tuck-in and ship-out dining experience and unique to the area. Of course, there are plenty of places that serve pies but few have the range on offer at the Piebald Inn.

You are welcome to go back to the bar after you have eaten, of course, and digest your meal at your leisure.

The Piebald Inn invites return visits because there is so much on the menu to tempt pie connoiseurs – and like the pies diners are well filled after a visit.
