Stylish desk setups are everywhere, and these eye-catching PC speakers could be the easiest way to upgrade yours

The explosion in home working following the pandemic has turned desk decoration into a competitive sport. Everything has to be stylish as well as functional, so we can bask in the fact our colleagues might have a bit of "desk envy".

One of the peripherals we can attach to our PC or laptop that really do lean into this new pursuit of style are speakers. Sure, you can rely on the sound from your laptop, but for quality, depth, and clarity, a set of speakers is a must-have.

And these new speakers by Creative, the Pebble X Plus are about as stylish as they come - they're also surprisingly decent to listen to, but I'll come back to that.

Firstly, those gold speaker cones are as lovely to look at in the flesh as they are in pictures. There's a clean simplicity to them, despite the main speakers being a tad bulbous. They sit well on the desk in their sphere-effect shape, and the only controls visible are volume and connectivity buttons on the right-hand speaker.

Then there's a small subwoofer which can be tucked away, and it all wires in to either USB, or Aux, or wirelessly through Bluetooth.

While they look quite attractive in their own right, the pair of main speakers also has a set of LED lights. Through the Creative app you can access a lighting tile that lets you customise the effects of the lights, or you can use six adjustable lighting presets.

The effects are quite addictive, but they're at their best in low light - they're not overly bright. That's a good thing, to be fair. You don't want them to be intrusive.

As for sound quality, these speakers are meant as a competent upgrade to a small speaker set, or your laptop's built-in speakers. And they do a great job of producing nicely amplified sound.

Despite the separate subwoofer they're not going to shake your office to bits with bass, but they do perform very well for a £100 set.

For anyone working, studying or streaming from a desk, the Pebble X Plus is a genuinely enjoyable upgrade — one that feels worth the space it takes up.

Compare them to seriously high-end speakers and you'll find shortcomings, but they're definitely a stylish upgrade and, especially with those funky RGB lights, you'll be sure to wow your colleagues with the looks of them alone.
