I put an AI bill-switching service to the test with my own energy bills and was surprised by how easy it was to uncover savings and get a cash reward

We're often bombarded with offers to save us money on our utility bills, and we know it's always worth shopping around - but do you really ever bother? Honestly?

I've found a clever new online service that does it all for you, and I got a surprise financial bonus just for checking it out.

It's called Nous, and I thought I'd start by putting it to the test with my energy bills, which are always stubbornly high.

Nous uses AI to analyse your current deal, and it puts it against all the other deals on the market and calculates your potential savings.

A tool then does all the work of switching you to a new deal – all in a matter of minutes.

Within a few clicks, I was told I could save around £280 per year, which sounded pretty appealing, but then, after a few more clicks, I was offered a "reward" of £5. And I was able to send it to my bank straight away.

There was never any "hard sell", never any obligations to sign up to anything, just a few simple steps, a few boxes to fill in, and I've got a quick and easy way to bring my bills down.

Nous even explores your broadband bills, mobile phone bills, council tax, water rates, and even your mortgage.

It's like having an AI bot sort out your finances for you, and you don't really have to do anything more arduous than give it permission.

Car insurance, home insurance, and TV packages can also be analysed for potential savings, and it's all on one platform.

There are two tiers to the Nous system. There's a free plan, which promises modest savings, managing two services, and one householder can administer everything. And then there's a premium tier at £6.99 per month, which promises much bigger typical savings, unlimited services, and unlimited logins.

By default, once you get a certain way through the application process, you're put on a free one-month trial of the premium tier, but Nous promises it will never charge you without your consent, and you'll automatically move back to the free tier.

I consider myself quite savvy when it comes to household bills, but this just goes to show there's always room for more savings.

And to have been given a £5 cash reward for my curiosity really was a pleasant surprise.
