Bridlington Town earn 1-1 draw on the road at Pontefract Collieries

Bridlington Town had to settle for a point at Pontefract Collieries after an entertaining contest at The Hunters Stadium, with both sides having opportunities to claim all three points.

The opening exchanges were evenly contested, with Pontefract applying pressure to the Bridlington back line while the Seasiders looked to exploit their pace on the counter-attack.

Bridlington appealed for a penalty in the eighth minute when Luca Bolino was bundled over inside the box, but the referee waved away the protests.

Pontefract responded with pressure of their own, forcing Alex Baird into action before Alex Markham and Jacob McLoughlin produced important blocks to keep the hosts at bay.

The Seasiders broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with a clinical counter-attack.

A long ball forward was flicked into the path of Destiny Nnenanya, who laid it back to Ahmed Salam. The captain then threaded a superb pass through the Pontefract defence, allowing Nnenanya to beat the offside trap and calmly slot past the goalkeeper one-on-one.

Baird produced a flying save to preserve Bridlington’s advantage, while Markham threatened at the other end after winning possession high up the pitch, driving forward and unleashing a powerful effort.

Pontefract equalised in the 39th minute through a well-worked corner routine.

Connor O’Grady attacked the front post and guided his header back across goal into the far side of the net.

Bridlington finished the first half strongly. Ben Tweed combined neatly with Bolino before forcing an excellent save, while Salam also tested the goalkeeper from the edge of the box as the visitors searched for a second.

The second half remained competitive, with neither side able to find a decisive breakthrough. Casey Stewart and Charlie Birdsall were introduced for Bolino and Eddie Kettlewell before Hamza Hamdosh replaced Will Marshall.

The Seasiders came desperately close to regaining the lead in the 66th minute. Tweed drove a low cross into the box from the right, with Hamdosh cleverly dummied the delivery to allow Nnenanya to shoot. His effort was deflected behind for a corner, from which McLoughlin rose highest at the back post, only for his header to be cleared off the line.

Pontefract threatened in response, but Baird continued to impress. The Bridlington goalkeeper turned an effort behind in the 68th minute before producing another outstanding stop four minutes later, pushing a dangerous attempt well away from goal.

As the game entered stoppage time, Pontefract won a free-kick on the edge of the box but sent the effort wide. Bridlington then launched one final attack that nearly snatched all three points.

Birdsall played Toby Marriott through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and Marriott’s effort beat the stopper, only for a Pontefract defender to clear off the line once again.

Both sides had opportunities to claim all three points, with Baird’s excellent goalkeeping keeping the Seasiders in the contest and Bridlington coming close to a late winner of their own.

Ultimately, a draw was a fair reflection of an entertaining encounter, with both teams showing attacking intent and defensive resilience throughout.
