Heslerton battle back to earn home draw in opener against reigning champions West Pier
Wednesday evening saw the return of the newitts.com Beckett Football League, Heslerton battling back for a superb 2-2 draw at home to reigning Division 1 champions West Pier.
The visitors took the lead through a Sam Garnett finish, and Max McNiven then doubled Pier’s advantage with a well-struck shot that just eluded the fingertips of keeper Rich Gale.

Second half saw a more determined Blues take to the field and their belief would pay off as Ethan Chan thundered home his header from a Tom Stockdale corner.
Pier then had a spell with Gale pulling off a couple of fine saves to keep his side in the game and with little more than three minutes remaining their endeavours paid off as Rob Ruston won the ball on halfway, feeding Sam Besau who finished exquisitely across the keeper and in off the foot of the far post.

New boys Thirsk Falcon Development had a tough baptism into the league as they were soundly beaten 6-0 at home by Kirkdale United.
Finlay Burbidge got the visitors rolling with 15 minutes on the clock and went onto to complete a rare treble.
There were also goals for Harry Bowsher with a double, Liam Ward chipping in too.
Another new side, Scarborough-based Newby began brightly against Thornton Dale, only to be undone midway through the first period as James Sawdon grabbed a brace before the half hour mark.
Marcus Godsell would add a third for the visitors before the interval with goals for Toby Dale and Dawid Lesniowski following in the second half.
Promoted teams Goldsborough and Whitby Fishermen’s Academy were even at the interval with Ben Watson on target for the hosts and Jack Kelly with the Fishermen’s reply.
Toby Wilkinson hit the late winner for the visitors.
Promoted Division Two Champions Lealholm Reserves had a comfortable 4-0 victory at neighbouring Danby.
John Ventress, Ben Cairns, Ethan Jones and Harry Walton were on target for the visitors.
Snainton lost 4-3 at home to Rosedale.
The hosts went ahead on 20 minutes with a Mark McNulty strike, but Dale replied with a Neil Adams effort before Regan Hewitt restored the home advantage going into half-time.
The second half saw Adams equalise before Rosedale took the lead for the first time through Tom Barley. Euan Sellers levelled before a winner came for Rosedale from veteran Karl Richardson.
The returning Sleights found themselves two goals down to local rivals Fishburn Park Academy, Elliot Coates hitting a double before the break.
A great second-half response however, saw Ian Smith half the deficit with a deflected free-kick.
With less than five minutes left, Billy Wicking earned his side a well-deserved point as he bundled home at the far post.
Hotly tipped for promotion, Sinnington lost 3-2 at Ryedale Sports Club.
Stalwart Chris Rhodes struck twice after the break to put Ryedale in control.
Sinners levelled with a brace from marksman Jordan Anderson, but Ryedale took three points through a Dan Greaves effort on 70 minutes.
Newcomers Edgehill Development lost 3-2 at Goal Sports.
Max Philips netted for the hosts on 30 minutes. Tyson Stubbings then found the back of the net before Drew McCoubrey pulled a goal back for the visitors.
Sub Sam Thompson then hit what would be the winner, albeit Edgehill responded with a goal through sub Jon Noon.
Bagby & Balk welcomed Ampleforth, the visitors opening the scoring with a Jack Simpson penalty.
in the second half sub Kyle Pounder earned and convert an equaliser from 12 yards too.
Minutes later Pounder put his side ahead but Amp hit back, again through Simpson.
The visitors then took the lead for the second time, Simpson yet again from the penalty spot, but Joe Burn headed home a 90th-minute leveller.
Heslerton’s Development team made the short journey to Amotherby & Swinton Reserves and got off to a great start as Jake Allardice scored twice.
The joy was short-lived however, as braces from both Nathan Cross and Callum Holmes, plus strikes from Ronan O’Hanrahan and Kallum Leogue rubbed salt in the Blues’ wounds.
