Ed Turner and Jordan Jackson-Bailey’s men had to fight hard for the win but struck the crucial goal in the first half.

It was attacking midfielder Sam Russell who fired home to decide the clash.

Sleights even survived a late scare when young goalkeeper Dylan Humble superbly tipped a goalbound shot onto the crossbar in injury time.

Sleights travel to Thornton Dale this weekend.

Thornaby Dubliners saw their unbeaten run in the North Riding Football League Premier Division ended by struggling Staithes Athletic, who picked up their first win of the season.

It looked to be going with form when Luke Duffy put Dubs ahead, turning home from close range, just after the hour.

But the hosts’ late show saw them triumph as Ryan Gibson levelled with a powerful header, two minutes from time and Connor Hood won it from an acute angle at the second attempt, with the last kick.

Fishburn Park lost out 2-1 to Grangetown Boys Club, with both sides chasing a first win.

Ellis Leka scored in either half for the visitors, with Dan Brown’s precise lob briefly bringing the Whitby side level.

Park travel to Bedale this weekend as they look to bounce straight back.

Despite goals from Jord Purvis and James Armstrong, Whitby Fishermens Society were well beaten 5-2 at home by Boro Rangers Reserves in Division One.

Rangers’ second string are underway at the first time of asking following strikes from Andrew Carr, Callum Hickman, Liam Sullivan and Jack Smith’s brace.

There’s derby action this Saturday as Whitby Fishermens Society Reserves host Goldsborough United.
