Former Wreyfield Fc player Dave Marsden said: “After joining forces with Steve Rowntree, we are planning a joint reunion event at Scholar’s Bar on Friday March 6, from 7pm.

“In the 1975/76 season the Wreyfield FC Under-12s and Under-14s both won their respective Minor League Cup finals, both sides also winning the league to do doubles.

The Wreyfield FC seniors team from a season during the early 1980s are, back, from left, Paul Lumbis, Kevin Marson, Mick Trotter, Gary Mollon, Steve Rowntree, Mel Trotter, Micky Dennis, Pete Minghella and Taffy Williams; front, from left, Paul Walker, Rob Newton, Clive Porter, Tim Walsh and Gordon Hopkins.placeholder image

“The trophies were presented by Gordon Banks. He was in town to play for Scarborough FC in the Anglo-Italian Trophy.

"Banks was a team-mate of Scarborough football legend Colin Appleton at Leicester City in the early 1960s, before he found fame as England's number 1.”

Darren Wood and Geoff Bowman, who played for the juniors, both went on to play for higher level teams, Darren for Middlesbrough, Chelsea and Sheff Wednesday, and York City and Scarborough for Geoff Bowman.

Marsden added: “Wreyfield FC was started by Joan Taylor, who had 15 children.

“She set the team up with eldest son and friends in the late 1960s. By the time her youngest son Adrian was playing, there were four junior teams, and still with Mrs Taylor at the helm despite having a big family.

"She then became a referee as we often couldn't get a ref! A remarkable lady.”
