Hackness and Scarborough Mixed A team win Driffield Tennis League Division 3 title

This is the last official Driffield and District Tennis League week for Hackness and Scarborough TC’s nine teams although there are one or two postponed matches still outstanding.

However due to the good weather we have had this summer these are thankfully very few.

The Mixed A team were on form against Long Riston where they won 9-0 to secure the Division 3 title, a superb achievement.

Sue Crocker partnered Rob Berry, Maria Jackson with Mark Draper and Lisa Gillespie played with Nathan Whiting

It was a different story for the Mixed B, as they lost 6-3 at Pocklington C.

In a hard-fought match the visitors put up a fight after going 3-0 down after the first round.

Vicki Calow with young Louis Fell took two rubbers with Sue Kendall and Bryan Edwards taking one, losing one on a tie-break.

Hester Butterworth with Paul Jackson despite battling hard couldn’t improve the score for the visitors.

This puts the team in a must-win situation against Pocklington D next week to avoid relegation.

The Mixed C team had another comprehensive 9-0 win at their Hackness home versus Driffield Recreation C putting them in contention for promotion from Division Five.

Louise Attley was with usual partner Tom Hunt, Hannah Benson with Jim Mellor and Jane Thompson with Steve Jepson.

In the Ladies section the A team were also at home and also had an excellent 7-2 win against Pocklington B in Division 2.

Sue Kendall and Jackie Speakman had a great night taking three rubbers with Sue Crocker and Maria Jackson and Hazel Cross partnering Lisa Gillespie taking two rubbers each.

The Ladies B team lost 6-3 at Market Weighton C, another close match as the visitors lost two tie-breaks which could have changed the result.

Jean Blenkiron and partner Hannah Longman took two rubbers losing a third on a tie-break.

Jilly Pigg with Abi Coates took a rubber and had three very close games. Judy Milburn with Jen Fell also lost a tie-break and couldn’t add to the visitors score.

There are only two Men’s teams to report on.

The B team have finished their matches and ended up mid-table in Division 3 and the D team had a walkover v Sledmere C and are in an unassailable position at the top of Division 7.

The A team finished their Division 1 season in style with a 6-3 victory at home to champions Market Weighton.

This was a fantastic achievement for the captain Tom Hunt and all his team and puts them firmly in the top half of the division.

Tom led the way with his great partner Rob Berry by taking all three rubbers. Marcus Brown and John Ellison took two rubbers and PJ Guthrie with his partner Ollie Cordingley adding the sixth.

The C team lost 5-4 at home to Bridlington B in a relegation battle.

The teams were tied going into the last rubbers, it looked as though the win was on when Paul Jackson and Nathan Whiting went ahead 7 games to 5.

Their Bridlington opponents came back to win on a tie-break and take the match.

Paul and Nathan won two rubbers with Mark White and Dan Marr and John Reay with David Mitchell winning one rubber each. This realistically means the C team will be relegated.
