Alan Landers wins opening Over-60s Winter Merit at Eastfield
Having attracted 51 bowlers to the previous Sunday winter merit Eastfield had 22 entries for the first Over-60s winter merit.
In the first round of the main competition, Nigel Trotter (North Cliff) crushed Mary Kenworthy (Westgate) 21-6 to set up game against his clubmate Ian Richardson who also won against a Westgate player, Bernard Chalk, 21-14.

Joyce Harland (Whitby) scraped through 21-20 against David Muir (Eastfield) while Ronnie Noble (Borough) was also pressed hard by Mally Kay (North Cliff) before going through 21-18.
Barrie Watson (Borough) brushed Tommy Roberts (Whitby) aside 21-10 to set up an all-Borough game against Gary Thornton who beat home star Ashley Brunton-Douglas 21-12.

Cliff’s Alan Landers had a comfortable 21-9 win against Caroline Watson (Borough) while John Burton beat Eastfield clubmate, and fellow green-keeper, John Jarvis 21-14.
The first quarter final was another very close game with Trotter just taking the honours from Richardson 21-20 while Noble had a more comfortable 21-13 win against Harland. Barrie Watson won the all-Borough game against Thornton 21-17 while Landers had a big 21-6 win over Burton.
Noble sprang something of a surprise by beating Trotter 21-16 in the first semi-final to set up a final against Landers who also won 21-16 against Barrie Watson.
Unfortunately the final proved to be very one-sided with Landers running out into a 13-4 lead after 8 ends before Noble pulled 2 back.
Landers then scored 3 to 2 in the next 4 ends to make it 16-8 and followed that up with 5 in 4 ends to win 21-8.
There were 10 entrants in the T&B and in the first semi-final North Cliff pairing Ed McCormack & David Hill won 21-16 against Eileen Greenwood & Tommy Roberts while Mike Carter (Eastfield) & Dave Wicks beat Bernard Chalk & Judith Andrews 21-15.
The final, between two club pairs albeit drawn at random, started out as a very competitive affair with North Cliff’s McCormack & Hill leading 14-13 after 8 ends.
Unfortunately for them Eastfield’s Carter & Wicks then took a stranglehold on the game and ran out the next six ends to win 21-14.
