Borough B team claim victory in inaugural Knockout Shield final

The weather on Wednesday evening was almost perfect for the inaugural final of the Knock Out Shield (The David Muir Trophy), a new competition for teams losing their first matches in the Knock Out Cup.

Although it was warm and sunny there was enough breeze to make for comfort and the neutral green at Eastfield was in good condition in spite of the hot dry weather.

The competing teams were Borough B who had lost their first match to Borough A and Bridlington Bay who had gone out to Whitby.

The final turned out to be a rather one-sided affair although there was plenty of good bowling from both teams.

Bridlington Bay were the Knockout Shield runners-up.

Borough started out with a big, 21-8, win for John Lloyd against Bill Preston.

This was followed by Borough wins for Sue Wilkinson, 21-13, and Pauline Allison, 21-19, against Bernard Chalk and Angela Garman respectively, before Tommy Donald got a win for Bridlington Bay 21-15 against Caroline Watson.

Unfortunately for Bridlington Bay that was their only winning game although several players came close.

The next four games saw Bob Dickens win 21-11 against Brenda Hensby, Penny Gosling beat Roger Lambert 21-17 and then two very close games, both 21-19, with Brian Daly beating Lynne Humpleby and Jo Gates winning against Jackie Turner.

Barry Gosling then won 21-13 against Albert Beggs and Steve Bell beat David Wright 21-14.

The last game onto the green reflected the first with Les Ramm beating Aled Jones 21-8 but Andrew Walker held on for a while against Lynn Gates before eventually losing 21-16 for an aggregate score of 246-178 to Borough B.

The Association President Emmo Emmerson made a short speech congratulating both teams and thanking Eastfield for hosting before avid Muir presented the new trophy to Borough Captain Jo Gates.

Again there was no Over-60s merit this week as we had had a team entered in the Hickson Trophy which is played over two Fridays.

Our team was eliminated last week and it proved impossible to organise an alternative event at such short notice.

On Monday in Division 2 of the Evening Singles League Westgate A won 149-111 (6-2) at home to Whitby C and Borough D also won at home, 148-124 (6-2) against Dukes Park B.

Elsewhere Bridlington Bay had a 157-92 (6-2) home win against Eastfield B, Hunmanby B beat North Cliff B 152-124 (6-2) at home and Dukes Park completed the sequence of home wins beating Robin Hood’s Bay 137-130 (4-4).

There was only one match in the Wednesday Over-60s League Division 2, Dukes Park C hosted Westgate A who recorded a clean sweep winning 15-0 (133-75).

In the Evening Doubles League on Thursday there were three clean sweep wins, all at home.

Borough B won 84-23 against Dukes Park, Hunmanby beat Westgate 84-47 and, perhaps predictably North Cliff A had an 84-37 win over North Cliff B.
