Col Stainthorpe and Denis Thompson net top spots in WSAA League matches

Wednesday evening it was ‘wild’, screaming Northerly winds 40mph, heavy rain throughout the three-hour Whitby Sea Anglers Association match.

The option and comfort of ‘Sofa Hole’ proved too popular, leaving just six members fishing, or trying to get a line out, writes Peter Horbury.

The growing 13ft Northerly ground swell left few marks fishable as HWater was 20.37hrs.

Conditions were the same for all, the catch forecast was understandably low.

At the scales, five members had a very meagre weigh-in six codlings, two rocklings.

Man of the Match with both Heaviest Bag of Fish and Heaviest Fish was Col Stainthorpe, Whitby, 5lb 2oz, his best codling was 2lb 3½oz.

On Sunday 14 fished the four-hour evening match, daylight for the first hour in much-improved conditions.

Sea state still 8-12ft Northerly with minimal colour. Slight Northerly breeze 5mph, full cloud cover, a neap tide, LWater 19.44hrs, 2.5m.

Although LWater was mid-match there was no advantage to be gained, the Tidal Range just 2.3m. Baiting up before match start, it was noted surging was going to be a problem.

At the scales “I didn’t have a fish until 21.00hrs.” was a common remark among members.

Nine successful members recording 30 codlings, 1 bass, 1 billet and 2 rocklings for the season-best weigh-in 70 lb 12 oz, doubling the season’s total catch.

Man of the Match was Denis Thompson, Lythe, 16lb 1½ oz, 5 codlings, 1 bass and a billet.

His best 4lb 10oz took Heaviest Fish of the night.
