Paul Morgan defeats Kevin Gates in Dukes Park Open Singles final
Sunday saw Dukes Park host an Open Singles competition in cool, but dry conditions.
In the first round Alan Lee fought out another hard-won game, this time against David Knights (Sheffield) by 21-18 to face Allison Roe (North Cliff) who beat her friend Sue Purcell 21-11.

Geoff Watson had a very comfortable win, 21-8, against Ashley Brunton-Douglas to set up a game against Whitby clubmate Paul Morgan who went one better by winning 21-7 against Mike Scott ((Dukes Park).
Geoff Oldham (Hunmanby) beat Larry Dixon (Westgate) 21-12 while Ronnie Noble was pushed by Scott Wardman (North Cliff) but eventually won 21-18.
Alan Landers was not troubled by Bernard Chalk (Bridlington Bay) in a 21-6 win but Tim Purcell had a harder task in a 21-19 win over Tony Chambers (Castleford).
Denise Dobson (Dukes Park) had a fine 21-15 win against Callum Malone (North Cliff) to set up a game against Mo Chambers (Castleford) who was not really troubled by Mary Kenworthy (Brid Bay) winning 21-12.
Barrie Watson scored a first ever win, 21-15, over Geoff Price (Dukes Park) while in a Gates family clash Kevin won 21-12 against daughter Katie (both Dukes Park).
This was also the score when Mally Kay registered his first merit win against Dave Wright (Westgate) while Chris Dobson (Dukes Park) won 21-13 against last week’s winner Ian Richardson.
David Muir nearly pulled of a big upset but eventually 21-19 to Stuart Thompson (Pontefract) while Adam Chilvers registered another 21-12 win against Albert Beggs (Brid Bay).
This was once again the score when Roe won the first second round game against her clubmate Lee only to have the “reward” of a game against Morgan who won the Whitby derby 21-14.
Oldham went through 21-17 against Noble while Landers just held on against Tim Purcell who staged a big comeback before going down 21-18.
Denise Dobson won 21-15 against Mo Chambers to set up an all-Dukes Park quarter-final against Kevin Gates who beat Barrie Watson 21-14. Chris Dobson ended Kay’s hopes with a 21-11 win and Chilvers scored the sixth 21-12 win of the day against Thompson.
Almost inevitably this was also the score when Morgan eliminated Roe to face Oldham who won 21-16 against the in-form Landers. Kevin Gates proved to be too much of a challenge for Denise Dobson winning 21-13 but Chris Dobson was taken all the way by Chilvers before edging through 21-20.
Morgan crushed Oldham 21-8 in the first semi-final and Kevin Gates was almost as ruthless in a 21-11 win against Chris Dobson.
The final was rather one-sided as Morgan won the first 2 ends and Kevin Gates replied by winning the next 2 to leave Morgan 6-5 up.
Morgan then went 10-5 up after 7 ends but Gates pulled 2 back in the next 2 ends only for Morgan to restore the five-point margin at 12-7 after 7 ends. Gates then scored another 2 only for Morgan to score 3 in the next 2 ends.
A single for Gates made it 15-10 after 14 ends but Morgan then took the game by scruff of its neck and scored 6 in the next 4 ends to win 21-10.
In the T&B final Sue Purcell & Albert Beggs beat home duo Geoff Price & Mike Scott 21-18.
