A competitive handicap over six furlongs on the Knavesmire saw the David O’Meara-trained ALGAR LAD win at odds of 14/1.

From the 17 runners, there was no more than half-a-length between the third-placed MEDHI and BLAINE who finished eighth.

The Richard Fahey-trained Medhi, must be noted as the Holy Roman Emperor gelding was the fastest finisher over the final two furlongs with a hand-time of 24.20, compared to the winner’s 24.41 and the second’s 25.08

From the first eight finishers, credit must be given to the winner as his burst of speed between the two furlong marker and the furlong marker was the fastest and is what subsequently won him the race, though his time for the final furlong was fourth fastest of the eight.

Tatlisu wasn’t given a hard time once it was obvious Algar Lad had flown and should be noted over similar distances.

The Paul Midgley-trained ANOTHER WISE KID finished 12th is another to take out of the race and will be dropped in the handicap following this performance, but is better than that run and should be followed at Redcar or Pontefract, possibly dropped back to 5f and in a class three or four contest.

Shock 40/1 winner GLASS OFFICE landed the Duke Of York Stakes spoils for trainer David Simcock, who also had fourth place CASPAR NETSCHER, three-quarters-of-a-length behind.

The race was run at a furious pace set by the William Haggas-trained MUTHMIR, who ran too freely in the early stages, setting fractions that ultimately cost him the race.

The Invincible Spirit gelding ran the five furlongs in a speedy hand-timed 57.72, faster than Areen’s time of 59.50 in the later 4.50. The time was also faster that Profitable’s time in the listed race the following day, the Handicap won by Indescribable and the two-year- old race run on Friday at the track, won by Delizia.

The three-year-old MATTMU was impressive enough in second, but JACK DEXTER must be noted for his turn of foot in the final two furlongs. Jim Goldie’s six-year-old clocked 23.26 for the last two furlongs quicker than the first two home, with an impressive time of 11.05 between the two furlong marker and the one pole.

SECRET GESTURE made all under an enterprising Andrea Atzeni ride to win the Middleton Stakes, a recognised stepping stone to the Coronation Cup at Epsom.

TALMADA ran a good race in second chasing the winner all the way up the Knavesmire and will be worth keeping an eye on her entries over the summer, given she is a Cape Cross filly out of a Galileo mare.
