Pocklington RUFC cruise to 87-3 win at struggling Doncaster Phoenix

Pocklington RUFC consolidated their league leader’s position with a comprehensive victory at bottom club Doncaster Phoenix.

Pock trailed 3-0 after a slow start before going ahead with an eighth-minute touchdown, floodgates then opened as they ran in another dozen tries for an 87-3 success.

That first score was a catch and drive combination from the forwards, finished by Will Husband.

And happy Pock hooker Husband enjoyed himself as both playmaker and scorer to end with a hat-trick of tries.

Prop George Grosvenor also plunged over from close range for the away team, while replacement back row Matty Downes blasted over after the interval and up and coming lock Eddie Shirley grabbed his maiden senior score.

But the rest of the Pocklington touchdowns came from long range threequarter interplays as they carved open the Phoenix defence with their passing and pace.

Doncaster were game opponents who never stopped trying, but in a rebuilding phase they put out the youngest and smallest side that Pocklington has faced for many a year, and once Pock's threequarters hit their straps the home side were chasing shadows.

Winger Flynn Sangwin started the back show, speeding clear after collecting a chip ahead on halfway.

The wing then linked with scrum-half Rob Boddy who went in from distance, followed by centre Louis Sangwin and fly-half Harry Matthews both sprinting over from moves started inside Pock's half to lead 40-3 at the break.

Doncaster enjoyed their best spell early in the second period, but Pocklington were as committed in defence as they were ruthless in attack, absorbing all Doncaster could throw at them before cutting loose with another flurry of tries.

Husband grabbed his second and third scores for the high-flying visitors, Boddy and Louis Sangwin both added a long-range second, Jed Jackson got in on the act with a right wing gallop and full-back Christian Pollock supported to cross out wide for a try to add to his 11 conversions from all angles.

The only down side was a shoulder injury to Ed Wraith, and there is no first team game this week to give the side some recovery time before hosting Pontefract on November 22.
