Castleton Show promises a packed day of crafts, dogs, music and fun

A traditional North Yorkshire show is returning this weekend with everything from homemade crafts and horticulture to hobby horses, vintage vehicles and a Scruffs dog show.

The Castleton & Danby Floral & Horticultural Society Show will take place at Castleton Cricket Field on Saturday, September 12, continuing a tradition which dates back to 1891.

The show field opens at 11am, with the main marquee opening at 1pm, and visitors can expect a packed programme of activities throughout the day.

Youngsters can get creative in a free bunting-pennant competition, with children aged under 16 invited to use fabric pens to decorate a flag which will go on display in next year's show marquee. The competition runs from 11am to 1pm.

There will also be opportunities to have a go at jewellery making with Steph Raw, spinning and weaving wool with Commondale Wool Workshop, and willow weaving with Skatebeck - with the craft activities available for a small fee.

For those with a competitive streak, there will be hobby horse jumping and the Castleton Show Run, while visitors can admire a display of vintage and classic cars, bikes and engines.

Organisers are also encouraging owners of interesting vehicles and machinery to bring along entries.

The main marquee will showcase the traditional heart of the show, packed with handmade and home-grown exhibits.

There will be craft and trade stalls, food trucks and a beer tent, while the Eskuleles will perform two sets during the day.

A homemade fancy dress competition will offer a £15 cash prize for the winner, donated by the Downe Arms.

Animal lovers are particularly well catered for, with have-a-go dog agility raising money for show funds, alongside the ever-popular Scruffs Dog Show.

Entry to the Scruffs show costs just £1, with rosettes and goodie bags for winners, and entries can be made on the day at the ring.

There will also be fairground rides and face painting for younger visitors.

The show's tearooms will serve tea, coffee and cake, while free parking will be available opposite the Eskdale Inn.

Admission is £5 for adults aged 16 and over and £2 for children aged 2 to 15, with under-twos admitted free.
