Hazel Kavanagh, Respiratory Nurse Specialist on the hospital's Lilac Ward, has been given a York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Star Award.

Her bosses say she has worked long days and more frequently, and been instrumental in training staff to be ready for the level of respiratory dependency that Lilac Ward experienced.

As well as training staff, she was helping give medications, providing personal care, assisting with meal times and staying over her working hours to review poorly patients.

Colleagues have praised her knowledge and expertise, and the way she brings "a calming influence to situations".

They said Hazel has dedicated many hours to teaching and training those unfamiliar with respiratory conditions in a clear and understandable way in a very intense environment.

They also said: "Hazel's knowledge and dedication towards patient care sets an amazing example for other members of staff."
