The dispersal authority which was in place until midnight on Tuesday (August 18) meant that anyone being given a direction to leave the area could be dispersed for up to 48 hours.

A police spokesperson said: “There have been concerns throughout the day and into this evening, whereby groups of teenagers are entering shops and commercial premises, causing anti-social behaviour, being intimidating towards staff in the premises, refusing to leave and swearing at staff and members of the public.

“Direction to leave notices have already been issued to several people with officers currently engaging with other groups to prevent further acts of anti-social behaviour.”

Inspector Craig Regan of Scarborough’s Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We don’t want to stop children having fun during the summer holidays; however, we need to prevent anti-social behaviour and potential criminality.

“We will be reviewing CCTV following the incidents reported to us and should it be required, we will follow up with our multi-agency partners.”
