Letter: We should have better roads for our money

When the motor car was invented the government realised new roads would have to be made to meet this expensive requirement.
There are over a billion pounds worth of pothole repairs needed. There are over a billion pounds worth of pothole repairs needed.
There are over a billion pounds worth of pothole repairs needed.

A new tax was introduced called the Road Fund Licence which would finance design, and build all new roads, maintain them and treat them against ice and snow.

All cars, lorries and buses were subject to this new tax on a varying scale.

This licence was effective and fair.

As the car and lorry numbers rapidly increased, the increased income was more than required so a new name was used called car tax which meant all the Road Fund Licence revenue going into a general taxation coffer, enabling the treasury to spend the money as was deemed necessary.

Now, resulting from the change, we have toll roads and bridges.

There are over a billion pounds worth of pothole repairs needed, hard shoulders on some motorways are being used as an additional lane, so far without a serious incident ... yet.
