Schools Minister Georgia Gould and MP Alison Hume meet local leaders in Scarborough to plan education reforms

Schools Minister Georgia Gould MP visited Scarborough to meet local partners and discuss how a Government initiative could expand opportunities for children and young people across the coast.

The event at the Crown Spa Hotel brought together representatives from the Cabinet Office, the Department for Education, North Yorkshire Combined Authority and North Yorkshire Council to help shape the roll-out of Mission Coastal.

Scarborough and Whitby have been selected as one of two nationwide pilot areas for the initiative following campaigning by Alison Hume MP in Westminster.

Ms Hume, who attended the event, said: “I was delighted to welcome Schools Minister Georgia Gould to Scarborough and bring together local partners who are passionate about giving every child the best possible start in life.

“Mission Coastal is a real opportunity for our area because it puts the experiences of local children and young people at the heart of decision-making.”

The scheme will bring together schools, charities and local organisations to identify barriers facing children and their families, share best practice and develop a long term plan covering support from the early years through to adulthood.

Discussions at the event will help shape the first phase of the plan.

Ms Hume added: “I am hoping that the combination of the government’s SEND reforms and Mission Coastal will deliver the education and opportunities our children and young people need and deserve.

“I want every young person growing up on our coast to know that where they live should never limit what they can achieve.”
