Scarborough's Orchard Cafe bakery could serve alcohol from 9am

Beer and bakes from 9am could soon be on the menu of a popular Scarborough café if a licence application is approved by North Yorkshire Council.

The Orchard Café in Scarborough’s town centre will be serving up alcohol alongside its traditional offer of pastries, cakes, and lunches if given the green light.

Coopland & Son’s application would allow the sale of alcohol from 9am to 4.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

On Sundays, alcohol could be sold from 9.30am to 3pm for consumption on and off the premises at 71, Newborough.

The café is known for its hearty portions, traditional menu, and welcoming atmosphere.

Speaking when the café was reopened in January, Sara McInnes, product and customer director, said: “We’re really excited to welcome everyone back to the café.

“Our chips and gravy have always been a customer favourite, so it was not even a question that they had to be on the menu, and we’ve partnered it with some other great deals.

“We have moved things on to make it a more usable space for the community, so you will find a Kids Corner so Mum’s and Dad’s can enjoy a well-earned cuppa and a slice of cake while the kids play ‘shop’, as well as a specific dog-friendly area for those that want a delicious hot chocolate after a nice beach walk with their four-legged friend, as well as a quieter section for those that don’t have either of the above.”

Cooplands previously said the refreshed café remains true to its roots, while introducing a few modern touches to appeal to both long-time fans and new visitors.

The deadline for members of the public to comment on the premises licence plan is Tuesday, November 17. Anyone wishing to make representations regarding the application should give notice in writing to: North Yorkshire Council, Licensing Services, Town Hall, St Nicholas Street, Scarborough, YO11 2HG.
