The college’s pass rate at A level was over 98 per cent, with 55 per cent of entries achieving one of the top grades A*, A or B.

Students completing two year BTEC National programmes have also achieved over 98 per cent pass rate, with 90 per cent achieving the highest grades of Distinction or starred-Distinction.

Dan Higgins, who is 18 next week, was delighted at his one A* and three As, in, respectively, media studies, computing, business studies and extended project, and will be going to Teesside University to do computing and digital forensics. He said: “I’m absolutely over the moon, I can’t believe it.”

Melanie Liu, 18, said she was “ecstatic” at her A in philosopy and ethics, B in history and C in biology, which means she is off to Birmingham University to study sports, physical education and coaching science. Her boyfriend Joe Emmerson, 18, was equally pleased at his two D*s and one D in sport which enables him to do sports coaching at Northumbria University.

Principal Marcus Towse said: “These are brilliant results, and are a great credit to the hard work of our students, and the progress they have made.

“Recognition is due to staff at the college for the quality of teaching and the huge amount of support given; and thanks also for the support of parents, and to our partner schools who provide the grounding on which the college builds.

“But in the end, each student needs to rise to the individual challenges of their studies, and their examinations: they should be deservedly proud of their achievements.”
