Whitby Boxing Club star Corey Greaves wins two regional titles in a month

Whitby Boxing Club’s Corey Greaves has had a brilliant month winning two regional titles.

Corey travelled to Northallerton to win the 66kg and under Yorkshire Junior Title, and just four days later he picked up the Yorkshire Area Title of the national championships.

“In Northallerton Corey jumped up a weight category to box Max Norton,” said father and coach Marlon Greaves. “He’d had a good last season defeating some strong opponents, so he was confident.

"Nevertheless, it was quite some feat to beat Max on home turf.

"Both boxers demonstrated skill, heart and tenacity in a non-stop action bout. Corey won by split decision with credit due to his opponent for making it a genuine contest with a possibly equally exciting rematch possible.

“His bout in the nationals in Doncaster made Corey a twice Yorkshire champion. He defeated Sheffield boxer Istvan Kiss who compelled Corey to re-adjust his tactics.

"Once Corey was in his rhythm he took over the fight and emerged victorious with a 3-2 split decision. Corey now moves to the next round where he will likely face an opponent from the north-east.

“My son is one of our longest serving boxers. He has talent, courage, aptitude and ambition but most importantly he’s totally committed to training most nights a week and monitors his diet to ensure he remains healthy and meets fight weight requirements.

"He’s resilient in the face of setbacks and is prepared to make sacrifices to succeed in the sport he loves.”

Corey lives in Sleights with his parents and younger sister and is a Year 11 student at Whitby School. He turns 16 shortly and will have GCSE exams to cope with next spring.

Corey said: “This last month has been one of my most rewarding. I went into the Northallerton bout confident as I’d trained hard with plenty of sparring in the lead-up. I stuck to the game-plan, and came out with a win.

"Then in Doncaster I grew into the fight and won.

"I’m grateful to my coaches at Whitby BC who devote so much time to helping us young boxers improve and to my sparring partners and peers in the gym and my supportive friends and family.

"Early next year I’ll be moving into the youth boxing section with contests lasting three rounds of three minutes.”

Local boxers Archie Stanforth, 11, and Nico Dale, 16, have also recently distinguished themselves in regional competitions.

Archie travelled to Leeds for a first scoring bout. He lost to a tough home opponent but showed skill and potential. Archie’s already working hard for his next contest.

Nico has moved successfully through the national championship regional rounds at under 75kg and is confident of success as he joins Corey in the next round.

“This has been a fantastic start to the season for our small seaside town boxing club. We’re hoping that Whitby people will show pride in our boxers by attending our home show at Spa Pavilion on November 14 to support local talent.”
