Whitby Coastal Rowing Club teenager Harry Morley has made a major breakthrough at senior level, winning a gold at the British Coastal Championships at the age of 16.

Following successful testing, he joined the GB Beach Sprint Performance Development Academy in South Shields last year.

There are just two such academies in the United Kingdom.

The academies’ aim is to identify, recruit and develop talented athletes with the potential to progress to Olympic level.

Harry's latest success came on home waters when Whitby hosted the British Coastal Championships.

Representing Whitby Coastal Rowing Club, he was part of a mixed quad that claimed the senior title, beating a field that included several GB team members and Olympians.

He wasn't finished there. Harry went on to win the Under-19 mixed double and the Under-19 Open single, retaining the junior mixed double title he won the previous year.

The results underline the rapid progress the young rower has made since taking up the sport.

Harry also reached the final stages of this year's trials for the Under-16 GB Beach Sprints squad and the rising star will now be determined to go one step further when the process begins again next year.

With his sights firmly set on representing Great Britain, Harry is proving that Whitby has a rising coastal rowing talent to watch.

Whitby CRC is also looking to build the next generation of successful junior athletes and will be advertising taster days over the coming months.

The club is soon expected to secure a clubhouse, providing much-needed indoor training facilities for its growing squad.

If you are interested in finding out more about this exciting sport, or simply enjoy being out on the sea, Whitby CRC would love to hear from you.
