When it comes to iconic TV programmes, it’s hard to think of a show more popular than Friends.

The hit American sitcom first aired in 1994 and, over the course of its 10 year run, it became one of the best loved comedy series of all time. Now there are rumours that it is set to make a return.

A reunion special?

Just months after the 25th anniversary of its launch, the Friends cast are now expected to reunite for a one-off reunion special.

The unscripted show will be used to help launch the HBO Maxi streaming platform, run by Warner Bros, which also owns the rights to Friends.

Will all of the cast be returning?

All of the original main cast members (Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry) have reached an agreement in principle following “tough” negotiations with series producer, Warner Bros TV, Deadline reports.

The six stars are expected to reunite for the hour-long, unscripted special, with it rumoured that each will receive between $2.25 and $2.5 million for appearing, although Warner Bros claims nothing has yet been finalised.

Will it be a reboot?

Fans shouldn’t expect the show of old to make a comeback, as the special is to feature reflective interviews with the cast, rather than a scripted episode similar to the original series.

Will anyone else be involved?

Friends creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane are also believed to be involved in the reunion special. While it has not yet been confirmed, the special is “most likely” to be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, according to the New York Post.

When will it air?

The air date for the special is yet to be confirmed, but a cryptic tweet from Matthew Perry suggested that it could be announced soon.

Perry wrote on Twitter last week (5 Feb), “Big news coming…”, which, unsurprisingly, sparked delight among fans.
