Lemon buns and ginger biscuit fan Alison Hume MP tours Whitby's Botham's factory
Alison Hume MP has visited Botham’s, one of Whitby’s most famous family businesses, to learn more about the opportunities and challenges facing food manufacturers.
During a tour of the company’s production facility on Enterprise Way, Ms Hume met staff from across the business before discussing a range of issues with directors Nick and Jonathan Botham.

The brothers are among 150 members of the family to work for the firm since it was established in 1865, opening its first shop on Skinner Street around a decade later.
Ms Hume, MP for Scarborough and Whitby, said: “Not only are Botham’s one of Whitby’s most famous names, they’re also woven into the fabric of the community.
“That’s why it’s important, as part of my ongoing work surrounding hospitality, that I spoke with Jonathan and Nick so I could take what they told me back to Westminster.”
Alongside discussions about the business environment, Ms Hume also heard how Botham’s is helping young people establish rewarding careers through training, and long-term employment opportunities.
During a tour of the state-of-the-art site, which also houses a café stocking the company’s best-loved products, Ms Hume was shown how items such as Botham’s iconic lemon buns, biscuits and tea breads are made and distributed.
Ms Hume added: “Botham’s are a fine example of a firm which not only serves the town but is also investing in its future.
“Like so many people, I’m a particular fan of their lemon buns and ginger biscuits.”
